Claire Huyghe has been working successfully with children for over 20 years. Before discovering Waldorf education, Claire worked in Belgium as a Kindergarten and Montessori teacher. She moved to Canada in 1989 where she studied Educational Kinesiology, and gave workshops as a Brain Gym instructor.  In 1991, when her children attended a Waldorf School for the first time, Claire witnessed a true joy of learning in the Waldorf classroom and decided to become a Waldorf School teacher.

She spent the next two years in California with her four sons while attending Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento where she graduated in 1994 with a BA in Waldorf Education. Claire has been working in Ithaca for nine years as a  Waldorf grades teacher, and five years as daycare provider in her Waldorf inspired  "Children's Orchard".

"Claire is a gifted educator. In my observations of her elementary school teaching, it was clear that students respond in immediate and heartfelt ways to her presence. She is skilled in teaching a wide span of ages. Claire has a quiet and discerning demeanor in the classroom - order and form prevail; students feel held by the hidden architecture of this form and clearly work to their fullest potential. Claire is adept at addressing the needs of the full chorus, but her perceptive energies allow her to address each student's individual needs. She can keep students with math skills spanning four different ages completely challenged and engaged. Artistic in many areas, Claire's creativity in music and painting enriches the students' experience of the academic content and helps them connect inwardly with the underlying themes of the lessons. Students love and respect the gentle authority of their teacher and wish to meet Claire's high standards. One can see their pride in their efforts and achievements. Because of Claire's inner commitment to community life and to the higher being of each child within that community, the students' behavior is compassionate, open, and free."

Tanya Kingsley  teaches Spanish at Homeschool Haven. She is a native of Mexico. Tanya brings the Spanish language in a very creative way through songs, verses, movement, games, dance, drawing and stories. She teaches with lots of enthusiasm and a most beautiful smile.

Tanya graduated from the Centro Nacional de Danza Contemporanea in Queretaro, Mexico, with a BA in modern dance, stage lighting, and scenography. During this time she also danced professionally with the Ballet Nacional de Mexico.
Tanya came to New York in the 1990s for a one-year yoga retreat. In 2007, she moved to Ithaca with her husband and two boys. She joined the faculty of Stone Circle School and began her Waldorf teacher training at the Centro Antroposofico de Mexico. Tanya has been a faculty member at New Roots Charter  High School since its opening in 2009. We feel honored to have  Tanya join us at Homeschool Haven.

"Tanya is a gifted language teacher who brings vitality, creativity and intelligence to her work with elementary school students. She is deeply skilled in sharing the cultural and linguistic heritage of the Spanish language. Tanya is discriminating and thoughtful about what she presents to the students, employing a healthy variety of activities within the class period that serve the particular age and disposition of the group. She moves effortlessly from conversation to recitation, to games and song, and finally to the more academic activities of grammar work and reading and writing in Spanish. Filled with humor, warmth and real learning, Tanya's classes demonstrate that education is truly an art form. Her love of teaching and her ability to inspire her students are everywhere evident."
